Route 3 has a whole bunch of Pokémon Trainers for you to fight, so you’d best be prepared for a rather long gauntlet of battles. The route itself is fairly straightforward, heading eastbound with an upper path and a one-way return bottom path. You’ll generally want to take the top path unless you want to hop down a ledge to get an item.
Before heading through the gauntlet of Trainers to the north, you can fight against Lass Janice guarding the southern path. There are 3 Poké Balls waiting for you down there. You should also see an item on a ledge that you’ll be able to get in just a moment, so keep that in mind and that you’ll have to return this way after getting it.
As you approach the northern path, a Coach Trainer will introduce himself to you. Coach Trainers are stronger than normal Trainers and provide a good challenge while potentially offering a good reward. Go ahead and take him on if you’re feeling up for it.
Kareem’s Bulbasaur will sap your health away with Leech Seed, which deals a consistent amount of damage between turns while healing Bulbasaur for that same amount. That can make it a bit trickier to take down, but it shouldn’t be too much of a struggle, especially if you have a Flying-type Pokémon like Pidgey or Spearow. After beating him, he’ll give you a Revive, which can be used to revive one of your fainted Pokémon in a Trainer battle (or even outside of battle if you can’t make it to a Pokémon Center).
Keep going ahead and you’ll find Youngster Calvin. Hop down the ledge south of him and pick up the Potion that you saw earlier. You’ll have to hop down the ledge and then head back to where he was in order to continue.
The next Trainer on the way is Camper Victor. He and his Nidoran♂ are unlikely to be a threat to you, but at least you’ll get 2 Great Balls for beating him, so it’s definitely worthwhile. By the way, you’ll want to hold onto these Great Balls until you encounter rarer Pokémon in the upcoming routes and areas, as most of the common Pokémon are common enough that using a Great Ball isn’t necessary.
Keep going and you’ll finally find some tall grass with wild Pokémon available.

In the patch of grass is Picnicker Robin. She, too, gives you 2 Great Balls for defeating her, so be sure to fight her and her Nidoran♀. There’s a Lure nearby one of the bushes by the path leading up a ledge.
Keep going east and you’ll find the infamous “I like shorts! They’re comfy and easy to wear!” kid, Youngster Ben. Just south of him is Bug Catcher Greg.
You’re almost at the end of Route 3! Head to the east and you’ll find a final patch of grass with a Revive in it, which you should definitely pick up as they are not very cheap and currently cannot be purchased.
Continue north whenever you’re ready and you’ll find it change to Route 4.
