The Elite Four are four of the toughest Pokémon Trainers in each region. They are part of the Pokémon League and its organization, and Trainers must earn the region’s Gym Badges and then defeat each of the Elite Four members before taking on the Pokémon League Champion.
Each region has a different set of Elite Four members, with a few exceptions. For instance, Kanto and Johto both share their Pokémon League, Elite Four, and Champion, while the Galar region doesn’t have an Elite Four and use the Champion Cup tournament as the prerequisite for fighting against the reigning Champion.
In some games, the Elite Four are fought in a predetermined order, with the later members of the Elite Four having progressively stronger Pokémon. Starting in Generation V and remaining throughout Generation VI and VII as well, with the exception of remakes, the Elite Four can be challenged in any order but all four must be defeated before challenging the Champion, and the Elite Four in these games all have the same levels and approximately the same level of strength.
The Elite Four are similar to Gym Leaders in the sense that they generally specialize on one type.
