Every Pokémon belongs to one or two Egg Groups, which determine its compatibility while breeding for Pokémon Eggs. Pokémon must share at least one Egg Group with each other in order to produce an Egg when left at a Pokémon Day-Care or Pokémon Nursery, in addition to one Pokémon being male and the other being female (an exception to this is if breeding with the Pokémon Ditto).
There are 15 different Egg Groups, including two special Egg Groups: Ditto and Undiscovered. Pokémon usually remain in the same Egg Group for their entire evolutionary line, although some Pokémon, particularly Baby Pokémon, start in the Undiscovered group and cannot produce Eggs until they evolve.
You cannot see a Pokémon’s Egg Group in-game, and instead must rely on online Pokédexes such as the Marriland Pokédex to see which Egg Group(s) a Pokémon belongs to.

Genderless Pokémon and Egg Groups
Although many genderless Pokémon are in the Undiscovered Egg Group, there are several genderless Pokémon that are in a different Egg Group capable of producing an Egg. These Pokémon are capable of producing an Egg, despite being genderless, but they can only do so while breeding with the Pokémon Ditto.
Pokémon like Staryu, Carbink, and Rotom are all examples of this, where the Pokémon itself is genderless but it belongs to an Egg Group other than Undiscovered. They cannot breed with male or female Pokémon also in that Egg Group, but are fully capable of breeding with Ditto to produce an Egg of that Pokémon’s species.
Of course, genderless Pokémon—or, really, any Pokémon regardless of its gender—cannot produce an Egg if it is part of the Undiscovered Egg Group, so keep that in mind.
