Pokémon X & Y Wondersleeplocke Versus

Taking place almost exactly one year after the original Pokémon FireRed vs LeafGreen Sleeplocke, the Pokémon X & Y Wondersleeplocke Versus stream took place, pitting Marriland against site contributor Sephazon for the second time, this time in the newest games, Pokémon X & Y.

Unlike the previous Sleeplocke, the “Wonder” element of the Wondersleeplocke meant that their Pokémon would be received over Wonder Trade instead of relying on what is available in the wild, meaning planning and preparation is of little use. It was also a great way to increase viewer engagement.

This stream took place during the same week that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS was released in Japan, and as Sephazon was using Marriland’s Japanese 3DS Capture at the time, it led to some of the stream being used to showcase it, although not necessarily to Marriland’s approval.

Rules of the Challenge

Sleeplocke Rule

  • The player of the game loses the challenge if they, personally, fall asleep, meaning the game must be beaten in a single day or play session.
    • For most players, they are free to take breaks, save their game and come back later, grab a bite to eat, etc., as long as they don’t fall asleep. In the context of a stream, this is generally one sitting and one giant stream session.

The Rest of the Rules

  • Fainted Pokémon are considered dead and must be released or permaboxed (we permabox in this case).
  • You can only catch the first encounter in any route or area (except the forced Pidgey on Route 2 and Snorlax on Route 7). These must immediately be Wonder Traded away after they are caught, with an exception being made for the starter Pokémon, which is Wonder Traded AFTER your second encounter is Wonder Traded and only after that received Pokémon is at level 5 or higher (to prevent having to train two level 1s).
  • Dupes Clause: If a Pokémon is received from Wonder Trade is one whose evolution line has previously been received from Wonder Trade, that Pokémon must be re-traded until a new Pokémon is received. (Dupes Clause does NOT apply for the first encounter in an area, just what you actually GET over Wonder Trade!)
  • Level limit: While loosely enforced and, in this case, intentionally set several levels higher than the Gym Leader’s highest level Pokémon, the level limit requires the player to deposit any Pokémon that surpass that limit. Pokémon received over Wonder Trade higher than the limit must be re-traded. The level limit is shared between players.
  • Luvdisc and male Combee must be re-traded if they are received over Wonder Trade because they’re really not useful and we both agreed on this.

Additional Rules

  • There aren’t any overly challenging rules or restrictions being implemented since the main challenge of this series is staying awake long enough to complete the game, while also under pressure to finish before the other player.
  • As such, the level limits are loose, the use of O-Powers is accepted from Passersby and Acquaintances, and Mega Evolution is absolutely allowed.

Trivia About This Series

  • This was the first of the Pokémon stream series on Marriland’s Twitch channel that used a “layout script”, as it is often called. The layout script was a programming language script used to automate the display of the layout so neither player would need to update their layouts manually and it could instead be systematically updated.
  • Unlike the first Sleeplocke, this one was done with both players in the same venue. This required quite a bit different of a setup than doing it remotely — in some ways, it was easier, but it was also somewhat more challenging in other ways.
